Putting others first is easy to say but hard to do sometimes. The “easy” part is giving to the poor or making sure you don’t run over someone in the parking lot. We react instinctively when its obvious or I like to think so. Knowing exactly what someone needs is more difficult or when you think a person is a pain. Either way, the knowledge of this knowing comes from the posture of humility and then serving the person in love. We can talk a good story but listening to someone or forgiving them without receiving anything in return is much more difficult. The strength to do this can come from fasting.
Fasting obtains of God, knowledge of his mysteries. Fasting is purposeful. The chief end of fasting is the mortification of the flesh, that the spirit may be more strengthened. Fasting is a way to know the will of God and do it. Jesus came to serve, not be served. He trained his body for this end, putting others first. So this Lent try putting others first by fasting for the sake of those painful people in your life. And try this prayer daily, Lord, I pray that you help me fast so my spirit can be transformed, putting others first; to accomplish what they need.
Amen.
The Knights of Columbus strongly supports the view that life begins at conception, a view that is held by our Catholic faith. Therefore we also support peaceful efforts to not just change the laws and court rulings surrounding abortion

Papal Quotes
"He would drive his strength against a mountain and plunge his strength against the sea...but know that the mountain would stand while the man broke himself and the sea would surge while the man drowned in it."
Pope John XXII
